Reflective Narrative:
In this course I learned about African culture that helped me understand more about the challenges of other minority cultures in this case through African literature. During this course I was able to learn about African American culture within the following themes such as the struggle to find their identity, having to fight against a Veil and Double consciousness, religion, obedience and slavery. The opportunity of learning about a second culture empowered me to think aboutside my own bubble because society has created different stereotypes for minority races and even when being part of a minority group we tend to not be open to learning another culture. As part of my final I had to analyze certain pages from the book The sellout and present my findings in front of the class. This assignment was important because I was able to learn how stereotypes work towards black people and get judged even when they haven't done anything bad and the choices of right or wrong. This course of narratives fulfills the immersion of a second culture because through the readings I came to understand that all the voices on the narratives are compelling because it gives their perspective based on personal experiences. A challenge that I faced with this course was vocabulary because African Americans tend to speak and write with a different style and use a lot of old english and in order to understand the readings I had to use google to find the meaning of the words. The most valuable takeaway from this course was that literature can teach us so much and hearing stories from marginalized people helps your critical thinking to develop by paying really close attention to all the little details of the books.
