Reflective Narrative:
The course of SPAN 300: Pre-Capstone, prepared me with the necessary resources to carry out an scholarly research and have the outline for the course WLC 400 major capstone project. In order to know the requirements of a research paper I read the ebook, The craft to Research where I got the main parts of a research paper which included: purpose of research, literary review, methodology, research question, discussion, conclusion and a bibliography. Another take away from this class was that a literature research paper follows MLA style, on the other hand a linguistics research paper is in APA style. The most challenging part of this course was to find the sources for my group’s research paper because there were not many studies that connected to our research question; What are the perspectives of a student, a teacher, and a mother about the educational experiences of ELD students in a high school on the central coast of CA? and also organizing our sources into the synthesis table was a difficult task. However, the fact that we had different presentations from our research librarian helped a lot because she guided us to different sites to find our scholarly sources. In the course of the class I learned that we can have many ideas about a question or topic, but when it comes to looking for information that can support those ideas it is complicated. However, it helped me develop my skills in technology and polish my knowledge of how to cite a source and make sure of the credibility of the internet pages I was using. At the end of the course my group and I had our outline of what we wanted to carry out in our capstone project; Educational barriers for Spanish-speaking students on the central coast of CA, which would be finished in the course WLC 400. In conclusion, the organization of the class was beneficial because a research paper takes a lot of time and by breaking it down into parts was favorable to not having a mental breakdown. This class was significant because what I learned I can take with me for future reference in the credential program for when I have to write my teaching thesis. In the future I do want to develop more research papers and improve my time management skills with writing out a full and well organized paper.
