MLO 3 Literary and Cultural Knowledge
Course Description: This course introduces the principles of literary analysis, based on reading and discussion of Hispanic literary texts. Includes fiction, drama, essay, and poetry from Spain and Spanish America. Taught in Spanish.
Reflective Narrative:
SPAN304 was the introduction to Hispanic literature. This class was very interesting because I got to learn about prose, poetry and its literary figures and drama. There is so much to learn about literature because of all the elements that can be found in a piece of literature. I was able to learn how to read tales, narratives, and stories by breaking them down into pieces using symbology, literary figures such as metaphors, similes, and hyperbole. An amazing literary movement was magic realism because that’s when a writer uses fantasy and reality in their literature. This element gives the reader the ability to pay attention to what’s really happening in the story. Some challenging examples of this prose are “No oyes ladrar los perros” by Juan Rulfo and “La noche boca arriba” by Julio Cortázar. I can say that the least part of the course that I enjoyed was learning about poetry because of all the syllables counting and figuring out the type of poems. However, after all the lectures about poetry I learned that there is so much to take in consideration when writing a poem, for example is it going to be a stanza, couplet (2 line stanza), tercet, quatrain, cinquain or sestet, a sonnet. I was able to put together all the elements of poetry that I learned in a presentation about the poem “Noche Oscura” by San Juan de la Cruz. At the end of the semester I learned about the difference between drama and a play. This part of the course was very fun because after reading the play “Resguardo Personal” and learning about the different parts of a play, with a couple of classmates and I acted out a script. In the future I want to add plays into my own classroom because it’s a fun and interesting way to learn about a certain topic. After all, this course helped to open my imagination to my own literature.
