Reflective Narrative:
The course HCOM 31: Deliberation and Advocacy was a challenging course at the beginning. However, as the course continued it got easier and helped me develop some of my public speaking skills as well as teaching me how to write an argumentative essay. During this course, I learned that disagreements are inevitable in this world, but they can be beneficial to the processes of thinking ethically and effectively in decision making. Therefore in an argumentative discussion, the winner will depend on how well an argumentation is developed and presented. In other words, an argumentative discussion articulates what the speaker believes is the best solution to a problem, or a conflict topic. Cooperative argumentation is the process of comparing, focusing on the development of argument as a community-centered process to make the best decision based on empathic understanding, sound reasoning, and relevant evidence. This class boosted my knowledge of how to find relevant information to defend my position on an argument. In this class, I applied my learning by writing a paper on the topic of “homework”, which was our position essay and also by completing an oral presentation explaining our points of view after having a discussion on the issue. This class pushed me to get out of my comfort zone because public speaking makes me nervous and my voice disappears as I stand in the front of the room. However, after taking this course, I gained confidence in my oral skills and bravery to speak out about my opinion as long as I have relevant evidence. Even though this class helped me with my oral skills, I still need to keep working on my public speaking when it comes to English.
