MLO 5: Cultural Internalization and Language Immersion
Course Description: Pathway 2 will be working on a community project to fulfill this requirement.
Reflective Narrative:
The best part of this course was that it was an asynchronous class. I took this class as part of Pathway 2 where I had to work on a community project to fulfill this requirement. In order to come up with our final narrative essay, we were required to share our own values, perspectives of an important topic that relates to the Latinx community. Oral narratives are important because it helps to pass from generation to generation different values and life lessons. The topic that I decided to analyze was about the reasons and obstacles that immigrant people face when coming to the United States. Special Topics helped me to gain more knowledge of the reasons why families leave their country. In this class, through an interview with two members of my community and two books “Cajas de Carton” by Francisco Jimenez and “La Linea” by Ann Jaramillo, I was able to understand that immigrants cross the border with the hope of a better life. This activity opened my eyes to the fact that literature connects to the community and in order to make these connections we have to use oral narratives. Our values represent who we are, our culture and by interviewing two people from the community I learned about common experiences. In conclusion, these interviews and projects taught me that I want to be able to help my community by translating, giving out information to those that do not know how to read or write because that’s what I learned through interviewing these community members: that language is definitely a challenge to living in the United States.
