Reflective Narrative:
SPAN 306 was about the culture and civilization of Spanish Latin America. In this course I was exposed to the history and culture of Latin America from the Pre-Columbian period to the present. My favorite learning part in the course was about the mesoamerican civilizations and the impact of the Spanish conquest of Latin America. Dr. Oliva gave us in groups the different civilizations in order to learn about their contributions before the Spaniards came to the “New World”. There were different readings that helped me understand about all the river systems of Latin America, the explorations, conquest and their significance. During class, I was able to share my opinion and better comprehend the questions that I did not understand in the readings. Throughout the course, we had two presentations in which one was focused on the Aztecs and the second was about Peru. Researching was part of the class as well because we had to find important information regarding a specific country of Latin America. A take away from this presentation was me waiting to go to Peru and visit Machu Picchu. Latin America is rich in history, culture, and traditions. After taking this course I want to keep learning more about all the countries of Latin America and visit each of them because there is so much to learn about their fauna, flora, gastronomy and geography.
